Why Merino Wool?

Humans are clever, but nature is smarter and Merino wool is nature’s wonder fibre that has evolved over a million years. Originally from the Atlas mountains of North Africa, the Merino is one of the world’s most ancient breeds of sheep. It is also one of the toughest. Very different to regular sheep chewing grass in the lowlands, the Merino now live in the extremes of New Zealand’s and Australia’s southern alps and highlands. Regular sheep would freeze to death up there but the Merino’s fleece is built for extremes. In summer, his thin, light, super-breathable coat keeps him cool in temperatures that hit +35°C / +95°F. In winter, he grows an extra layer of wool over his base coat as protection against temperatures that plummet to -20°C / -68°F . This is why merino wool is the most prized in the world, famous for its quality, purity and softness.

Merino’s natural attributes make it one of the most comfortable of fabrics to wear and help us create the perfect sleeping environment for young children.

Breathes and controls moisture…

Merino wool traps warm air between its incredibly fine fibres (about 1/10th the width of a human hair) to create a cosy micro-climate next to the skin to keep little bodies warm. However, a Merino fibre also has a protective lanolin layer that naturally repels water and draws moisture away from skin to help keep your little one dry and cool. This incomparable ability to breathe and absorb moisture from the skin – up to 40% of its own weight – means your child will not feel sweaty or clammy. This is why athletes and outdoors enthusiasts (like skiiers, cyclists, hikers) use merino thermal base layers every time.

Regulates temperature…

Babies under 18 months have difficulty regulating their own temperature because their body surface is about three times greater than an adult's compared to the weight of his/her body and they can lose heat four times more quickly.

When babies are cold-stressed, they must use up energy to generate warmth. With Merino keeping them at optimal temperatures and protected from extremes, neither too hot nor cold, they become more relaxed, sleep longer and in turn, build up reserves. This is especially important for babies that are sick, born prematurely or at low weight.

Reduces skin allergies…

Each Merino fibre has a silky outer layer, creating an extremely soft, fine texture. Our superfine merino is soft and comfortable to wear without itchiness. By forming a natural micro-climate around your baby’s body, it is naturally hypoallergenic and safe to use for babies with eczema, allergies and sensitive skin – so much better than artificial synthetics!

Improves sleep routines…

Medical studies have proven that merino improves the sleep patterns of babies and infants. At the Cambridge Maternity Hospital in 1979, Scott and Richards revealed that babies sleeping on merino settled more quickly, cried less, fed better and gained weight faster.

The same medical studies investigating the effect of merino on premature and low birth weight babies found that they gained an extra 10g a day compared to babies that weren’t sleeping on merino.

Swaddling with merino…

A number of studies have shown that swaddling babies tends to reduce the likelihood of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) since overheating has been identified as a key factor in many cases. Therefore, there is a strong case for using merino because of its previously noted ability to regulate heat and humidity. Safe sleep for all.

Comfortable and easy to care for…

Our Merino is 200 gsm (grams per square metre) making it soft, light and comfortable to wear. It is naturally elastic, fitting snugly every time. It is odour resistant, reducing the need for frequent washing. Thanks to its natural breathability, there is no need for Tog ratings unlike products made from synthetic fibres.

Safeguarding your child…

Untreated natural fibres such as cotton, linen and silk have a very high burning rate. Synthetics, once ignited, can cause severe melting and dripping. Merino wool contains natural fire retardants and can even self-extinguish, but if ignited, has a slow burning rate. This makes it the preferred fabric choice for the armed forces and firefighters. Merino also has a natural UV factor of 30 or more, much higher than other fabrics and great protection when exposed to the elements.

Scientifically proven…

Scientific research findings released by AgResearch, New Zealand’s largest national Crown Research Institute, indicate that baby sleep bags made from natural, merino wool are better at maintaining a baby’s comfort and wellbeing compared with synthetic, polyester-filled sleep bags. Read the full report here.

Secondly, the “Sleeping Comfort Study” – conducted by The Woolmark Company and the University of Sydney, funded by Australian Wool Innovation – examined more than 30 wool and non-wool ‘over’ and ‘under’ body bedding products in a range of temperature and relative humidity environments. Through a Thermal Comfort Rating System, wool bedding products were the undoubted winner:

  • Breathe more naturally than synthetic products.
  • Increase the duration of the most beneficial phase of sleep known as REM, or Rapid Eye Movement.
  • Regulate body temperature by ensuring the body gets to a comfortable sleeping temperature more quickly - and stays there for longer.

The safest and best natural sleep…
